A Boy Named Tammie - promoting a fix for a non-existent virus

He appears to be back, but has changed his name by deed poll to Tammie Brophy?  Tammie looks more masculine (in fact has a bit of a movie star look) - he’s wasting his time giving faked advice on mallware and viruses - we see a Hollywood blockbuster in his future :

image

What chance do you think that is actually our male friend, and that his name is Tammie?  The Man in Black made some mileage from A Boy Named Sue. We wish he was still alive to sing about A Spammy Named Tammie.

And so here comes the usual misinformation. We remind their author and everyone else there is no such thing as an Outfox.TV virus. If they were any good at their job they’d know that.

But here’s their speil, we have the screenshots for lawyers but it’s also always good to have a copy to read again.

They went too far this time though. This sentence was too stupid for words, but is also ridiculously libellous so we’ll be very keen to track down our pretty friend and his lawyers.

Besides, programmed by level-headed cyber criminals, Outfox.TV Virus has the ability to pave the way for invasions of more other malign threats by exploiting your system loopholes, which mostly scares you.

HA!!! CYBER CRIMINALS.  THEY PUSHED ONE BUTTON TOO MANY THIS TIME. NONE OF OUR TEAM QUALIFY AS CYBER CRIMINALS, WHY IN HELL WOULD WE DO THAT TO OURSELVES???

Note to Tammie - the lawman’s a-comin’ - hitch up your petticoat and start a-runnin’ !!

Major Geeks - when is there such as thing as being TOO helpful

We think the Major Geeks service is a great online tool generally.

Unfortunately, people can’t reply to issues raised unless they’re a Major Geeks admin or staff member - which means we’re standing by watching people accuse OutfoxTV of being a virus or Malware, and in their spirit of kindness and helpfulness, the Major Geeks crew is responding with solutions to solve a Malware infection.

Calling all Major Geeks - OutfoxTV is NOT Malware!!
Please realize you’re asking people to install more software and run through a whole bunch of steps that are totally unnecessary. We suspect you’re also falling for some of the spam the odd IT support services put out there to try to create a virus where there is no virus.

Just for anyone who missed the truth (!) - OutfoxTV contains no malicious code - there’s no such thing as an Outfox.TV virus and no such thing as Outfox TV Malware.  Please please note!
This is some of the posts from Major Geeks forum and the content and advice being given. PLEASE NOTE, none of these solution steps outlined below are necessary!

Hi i have two computers that have recently got infected. I recently downloaded outfox.tv bundled with another program. From what I can tell outfox.tv is only 21 days old. Both Internet Explorer and Firefox redirect to : outfox.tv/?referid=170
The computer desktop is a Dell Inc. Inspiron 570 running Win 7 home premium 64 bit. I did all the steps under the read me for browser redirect and that did not solve the problems. I ran the Microsoft Malicious software tool and that showed no infection. Malwarebytes and Hitman Pro showed no infection either. Then as instructed I ran TDSKiller and no threats were found. I then ran Roguekiller and MGtools. I am posting the logs attached. I understand a response will take some time. Please advise on tow to remove the malware from my system. Thank you in advance.

A whole host of solutions were offered, but the ideal way to return the machine to original state is

1. Run OutfoxTV’s own uninstaller from the Start / All Programs / OutfoxTV / Uninstall link (or from Control Panel / Uninstall / Choose OutfoxTV and click ‘Change’ then uninstall

2. Restart the PC

3. Upon restart, *IF* the saved browser tabs aren’t removed during uninstall, just change these manually - these are just settings that have not been restored to original, not left over portions of the program!

Another enquirer posted :

I was motivated to sign up because I have a solution to the removal of OutFox TV, which I found came up on every tab. I hated it.
I wrote Outfox and was told this. (it actually worked!)

NEW TAB SETTING - FIREFOX

The new tab in Firefox may also open the website <snip>. To reset this type the following in your Firefox browser address bar:

about:config then <enter>

then in the search box enter :

browser.newtab.URL

Double click on the line / field for browser.newtab.URL

You can then change the value of the new tab to be anything you require.

This worked.
With my appreciation to all who have assisted me .

A number of ideas were floated specifically around malware removal tools. but OutfoxTV doesn’t contain Malware. As the OP listed, the solution we provided worked.

In fact, we are just releasing an update today that should remove the new browser tab issue, and in fact stop this happening in all existing installations.

Another poster added a new thread :

Hi guys

I know i recently posted on here about my dad but today its me.

Just a simple thing went wrong, today i downloaded an update for imgburn off Majorgeeks and it installed a thing called Outfox TV. I managed to uninstall it but it has redirected my browser and i cannot change it back.

I tried to fix it using the Fixing Google Redirection/Hijacking Problems bit but no luck. I also tried to remove it using your malware removal page but again no luck.

Would you mind having a look at the logs and suggesting a way i can redirect my home page back to google.

My comp is a Dell inspiron N5010
Intel cor i3 2.53ghz
3 gb ram
64x operating system
500gb hd

I will attach the logs to this thread. also hitman pro my trial licence has expired

Cheers for your help

There were a number of suggested solutions and risks raised, but the fact of the matter is our own uninstall and the manual reset of the browser is all that was needed to return the system to its previous state. It would have saved everyone a lot of time!

Another issue as stated as :

The reason no antivirus programs do anything is there is NO VIRUS attached to OutfoxTV. Getting a sore brain repeating this.
Major Geeks were being helpful and responded with a whole lot of steps. But all that was needed was using the standard uninstaller, and if the browser settings didn’t remove, a manual reset of the browser start page.  It doesn’t need to be this difficult guys!

The most recent Major Geeks issue was this one :

First off guys, I’m not a geek. I have common sense, but I am sort of computer illiterate. I downloaded a program anbd it also gave me OUTFOX.TV. When I add a window in Mozzilla, this page comes up: outfox.tv/?referid=180 I’m running Window 8.1. I have Webroot. I have Malware. I tried AGV and Kapersky. Nothing can get rid of the f***ing thing. On a good note, it doesn’t effect any other users, and when I do add a window, my Webroot catches it and tells me not to go any further, but I just can’t get rid of this. Help if you can, and tell me in layman’s terms how to delete this thing forever.. Thanks in advance

MG, in their spirit of helping replied with :

We’ll get it gone.

Follow these procedures please, and once done, attach all of the requested logs.

READ & RUN ME FIRST - Malware Removal Guide

Even the original poster said :

Holy hell that’s a lot of stuff to read and do. I’ll get to it later today and knowing me, I’ll probably have questions on how to find something or how to do something and I’ll have to follow up with some questions. I knew that I should have studied computers instead of music in college …
That’s because it IS a hell of a lot to do!! If we were allowed to post a reply on there we could have kept it down to :

a) Run the inbuilt uninstaller
b) Restart your PC
c) *If* outfox.tv is still your browser start page reset it using the native browser command in its settings.

Isn’t that a bit easier??

We reiterate Major Geeks is an awesome community. But the paranoia about malware and viruses doesn’t mean every piece of software is run by bad people!  We made some mistakes with early beta and the browser settings, which annoyed people, but they’re fixed now.  The release due out on Monday is going to provide a much smoother and more custmisable experience for everyone.

PLEASE, give us (and people who are asking for help removing a non-existent malware/virus) a break!

Someone offering advice that breaks the uninstall process

Yet another person who suggested they’re online to help people, but litters their very confusing post with links for you to pay for their service.

All the steps outlined by the poster are completely unnecessary!  In fact, by killing the running services, he ensures that our uninstaller can’t work. No wonder people get annoyed.  We couldn’t understand why our uninstaller wasn’t working for people till we found out this goose, with his stupid keyword-laded-domain and web address had been giving them completely useless advice.

DO NOT FOLLOW OR BELIEVE THE ADVICE BELOW. IT’S FANTASY CREATED TO MAKE YOU PAY FOR A SERVICE YOU DO NOT NEED.

If you want to uninstall OutfoxTV, we’re sorry to see you go, but just run the Uninstaller. If you’re on one of the original beta versions of the app, your browser settings may remain pointing to our website. In this case it’s an easy manual reset - this is a browser setting only remaining, not part of our program.

See our browser manual reset instructions on this blog or email support@outfox.tv for help, at no charge (unlike our mate below)

And of course there are no comments, as the guy owns the site and doesn’t allow anyone to post that there is actually a free and easy way to remove Outfox.tv usingt the uninsatller. So much for being helpful.

New Uninstaller

The version of Outfox.TV now downloadable from our website at www.outfox.tv now includes the updated uninstaller, which restores browsers to their original state when uninstall occurs.

To uninstall, it’s a simple 3 step process that should take less than a minute :

1. visit Start / All Programs / OutfoxTV / Uninstall or Control Panel / Uninstall / OutfoxTV (Change)

2. Select “Remove outfox as homepage” when the option is shown.

Upon completion, the OutfoxTV launchbar will be removed and the browser/s returned to pre-installation state.

New Features Coming in Next Version of OutfoxTV early Jan 2014

We listened to everyone’s proactive suggestions - and the following features are coming very soon :

Custom settings - set the OutfoxTV experience the way you want, including browser settings, location of launch bar

Improved Uninstaller - carefully resetting all elements including browsers back to their original state
More channels - a whole bunch of new and varied content including news and music channels

Running the new installer will overwrite and remove the old version, and save a lot of time for everyone!

Our lessons from OutfoxTV Beta

We decided to release our beta version with a number of installation partners because we need to test the ability of the broadcast channels and software to withstand periods of high demand.  Performance-wise, so far so good.

Unfortunately we made a couple of errors in judgement when releasing the App.

The first was the new tab settings in Firefox and IE.  Our test group hadn’t cared one way or the other, but the wider community obviously didn’t like what appeared a a browser hijack. We have removed this from the next beta release.

Second issue was failing to explain clearly enough that the App uses a new home page tab added to the user’s browser. Some people still don’t like that feature, but it reminds everyone of the most up to date content, and the reality of the Free TV is we need to be able to show everyone content regularly to create ad revenue which helps fund the servers, licensing payments etc.

The good news is these lessons have given us even more resolve to build you the best free online TV experience available. The next major release, within the next week, will include ability to customize the OutfoxTV experience, including browser and launch bar settings, user preferences, and more.

WHERE DO I GET / DID I GET OUTFOXTV FROM?

  • OutfoxTV is bundled for distribution with a range of software partners. It is installed via an opt-in or opt-out system, offering the opportunity to remove our program from those being installed, which requires the user to indicate either whether our program should be included or excluded from the installation. It is never installed without permission from the user.  Sometimes we find people have not carefully read the installation process when downloading a new program or updating existing software, but we are guaranteed by all installation services that our users are offered the opportunity to choose not to install OutfoxTV.  (If you believe you were not offered this choice, please email us with the ‘referid’ number shown in your browser next to the Outfox.tv website address, and we will investigate)
  • OutfoxTV can also be downloaded directly from www.outfox.tv

—-

WHAT’S NEXT IN OUTFOXTV?

We are acting on feedback from our user community and working on a new release to give you much greater control over how and where OutfoxTV is accessible on your PC.  Options such as whether OutfoxTV is set in the browser tabs, and if the launchbar is shown on your desktop, and ability to turn autoplay off on video content, will all be included.  We expect the new release out within the next week, and it will be available for download from www.outfox.tv.
In addition, a huge amount of new channels are on their way. Lifestyle, sport, music and news will all be added to over the coming weeks.

—-

DOES OUTFOXTV CONTAIN A VIRUS?

No, OutfoxTV is certified completely free of malicious code.  Some online services earn revenue by declaring innocent programs as virus or malware and offering paid ‘solutions’ for a risk that does not exist. Please don’t fall for these online scams - if you want to remove OutfoxTV you can do so safely using the Uninstall process outlined below. If that fails for any reason we will provide support at no charge to help you remove any trace of the application from your system.

—-

CAN I HIDE OUTFOXTV?

Right-clicking the launch bar at right of screen and choosing Move to background will place the program behind your other windows. You can also reduce the opacity of the toolbar so it fades into the desktop background.

ERRORS

If channels fail to play correctly, it may be an issue with an out of date Flashplayer installed on your machine.  Please ensure you have the latest version from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
If this doesn’t fix your problem, please take a screenshot of any error you’re seeing and email bugs@outfox.tv letting us know the version of Windows you’re using.

UNINSTALLING

a) Go to Start / All Programs / OutfoxTV / Uninstall

If you can’t see it in the All Programs list

b) Go to Start / Control Panel / Uninstall a Program and find OutfoxTV in the list, click on OutfoxTV, Click Change

If you can’t see the Program in either the above,

c) open Windows Explorer and look for C:/Program Files/OutfoxTV and double click the file named uninstaller.

Any of the above options will start the Uninstaller :

Click next >

image

PLEASE NOTE : The most recent version of the program contains the checkbox to “Remove outfox at homepage” - select the checkbox if you no longer want to retain a browser tab pointing to the www.outfox.tv website

image

After clicking Finish, restart your computer to delete remaining files.

—-

2. IF UNABLE TO FIND OUTFOXTV or the uninstaller .exe file in any of the above options, the uninstaller must have been run previously, or the OutfoxTV folder has been deleted manually.

If the folder was deleted manually this will not have properly uninstalled the program.

We suggest you reinstall the latest version of OutfoxTV downloadable from www.outfox.tv, then RUN THE UNINSTALLER as shown in Step (1).  This will ensure the program is correctly removed.

Be sure to contact support@outfox.tv before falling for any of the online scams that fraudulently claim malware and virus spreading from OutfoxTV - this is blatantly untrue. Save your money and use the uninstaller or our free support at e: support@outfox.tv

New features are on the way in coming weeks to allow more customization of the OutfoxTV player experience, including user preferences and further options to control display and functionality of the website and the desktop app.
